Global Efforts to Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Accelerating!

Global Efforts to Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Accelerating!
June 26, 2024

Over 150 countries have committed to reducing methane emissions by signing the Global Methane Pledge, aiming for a 30% reduction by 2030.

European Union

On May 27th this year, EU regulations limiting methane emissions officially became law. The new rules require Europe's natural gas, oil and coal industries to measure, monitor, report and verify their methane emissions using the highest monitoring standards and take actions to reduce methane emissions.

In addition, since a large part of Europe's fossil energy comes from imports, the new regulations will also introduce stricter requirements to ensure that overseas exporters fulfill the same monitoring, reporting and verification obligations as EU operators.

United States

In December 2023, the United States also announced its accelerated action plan to reduce methane emission. Through a variety of measures in sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, industry and construction, the U.S. government aims to achieve a 50-52% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.

One critical actions is advancing U.S. methane measurement and monitoring capabilities. The U.S. recently launched its first national strategy to enhance greenhouse gas measurement, monitoring and information systems, aiming to strengthen coordination and integration in these efforts. The U.S. government has convened the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), NASA, NIST and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to create a unified source of reliable greenhouse gas information for decision-makers.

China

In recent years, China has also introduced a series of regulations aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions. In November 2023, the Chinese government issued the “Methane Emission Control Action Plan” aiming to reduce methane emissions and promote high-quality development. Its main contents include:

  • Strengthening methane emission monitoring. Explore methane emission monitoring pilots and promoting methane emission source monitoring in key areas.
  • Researching and establishment of methane emission accounting, reporting and verification systems.
  • Enhancing the level of methane emission data information management.

In April 2024, the China Environmental Monitoring Center issued the operational guidance for Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) for fixed pollution source exhaust gas, Methane (CH4) and Nitrous Oxide (N2O) , specifying the technical requirements, performance indicators and detection methods for greenhouse gas CH4 and N2O emissions .

SIGAS Solutions

As a leading supplier in the industry of gas detection and analysis systems, SIGAS Group has accumulated rich experience and technical expertise in industrial process analysis, environmental pollution source monitoring, and gas safety monitoring. SIGAS Group has established a R&D center in Changshu, China, mastering core gas detection technologies. From the design and development of gas sensors to production and testing, SIGAS has a range of cutting-edge patented technologies and comprehensive product solutions.

In response to the accelerated implementation of global regulations on strengthening greenhouse gas emission control and monitoring, SIGAS Group has launched comprehensive product solutions for continuous emission monitoring of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) emission concentrations. These solutions not only meet local regulatory requirements, but also ensure precise and reliable detection results.

SIGAS Online Multi-Gas Analyzer SA-200

Product Overview

SA-200 is a multi-gas analyzer capable of simultaneously detecting up to five different gas concentrations, including greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O). The analyzer housed in a standard 19-inch chassis, it features a touchscreen display for real-time gas concentration curve visualization. The data output format includes digital and analog formats.

Product Advantages

  • Up to 5 detection channels can simultaneously detect the concentration of 5 gases including greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O)
  • The touch screen is easy to control, status/value/curve, three-screen sliding switching, clear at a glance
  • Standard configuration of zero point, full scale and third point adjustment to ensure good linearity
  • The filter does not need to be disassembled and replaced on site, ensuring 24 hours of non-stop operation

SIGAS Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) CGC-300

Product Overview

CGC-300 is a continuous emission monitoring system for smokestack emissions, employing multiple gas detection technologies. It can monitor fixed emission points for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), smoke parameters and various components including greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O). Additionally, it features networking capabilities for real-time transmission of online monitoring data in real time.

Product Advantages

  • All detection methods comply with international requirements
  • High-temperature heating throughout the sampling process to ensure the reliable and accurate detection results.
  • Rapid condensation techniques minimize smoke gas loss.
  • Flexible expansion allows for customized monitoring solutions tailored to customer needs.
  • Fully automated system operation eliminates the need for continuous human supervision.

smartGAS NDIR Gas Sensors:FLOWEVO Series

Product Overview

smartGAS FLOWEVO Series gas sensor is based on the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR)  principle, offering reliable and accurate detection of Methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations. The measurement range of CH4 is 50 Vol.% and 100 Vol.% with a linear error of only 0.6vol.%. The measurement range of N2O is 500 ppm, which can detect extremely low concentrations of N2O. Thanks to the short detection response time of smartGAS sensor (<12 seconds), fast and precise control can be achieved.

Product Advantages

  • Highly selective: low cross sensitivity to other gases
  • Long lifetime: up to 10 years
  • Fast response time: T90 < 12s
  • Small drift over time: long calibration cycles
  • Low cost of ownership: sustainable technology

Conclusion

Global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are gaining momentum with commitments from over 150 countries. Major economies like the EU, US, and China are implementing strict regulations and ambitious targets.

Advanced technologies from SIGAS Group are pivotal in improving monitoring and meeting stringent emission standards. These proactive steps and technological advancements underscore a promising path toward significant reductions in methane and other greenhouse gases by 2030.
